Personally I really don't like exhausts
to have sharp bends and for this bike I had designed a very
flowing shape that could probably only be made by sand bending.
We started with cardboard and then made a steel template from
6 mm roundbar. |
To avoid wrinkles we planned to heat the
outer curve most, which would result in more stretching than
shrinking. When you bend a pipe like that the inner volume will
increase, so we made an adjustable plug that could be tightened
while bending |
.Aad had thoroughly dried the sand in the
days before so there was no moisture in it, very important!
After filling the pipe and welding the ends with the adjustable
plug on one side, we could start bending. Aad was heating and
pushing while I constantly maintained pressure on the plug and
took pictures. |
The pipe came out exactly like we had hoped
on the first try, plenty of clearance from the generator as
well, |
