The first trip this year was to the Garage Maniacs Party in Belgium, about 10 kilometers before I got there the bike stalled at a traffic light. I had to kick it many times to get it started, which normally is not neccesary.

Finally it started and I got to the party and there found that I had under 9 volts in the battery so obviously it was not charging. After a night on the charger it was at 11.7 volts so the battery was not much good anymore either.

I rode home with the lights off without problems but on arrival it was under 9 volts again....

The battery was 8 years old so I replaced that, and to fix the charging I replaced the regulator, as 9 times out of 10 that is the reason. Not this time apparently because it still didn't charge, so I disassembled the alternator.

I left the clutch in place, used two bolts to press off the front pulley. I removed the pulley, tilted the inner primary back and removed the rotor with a simple puller. Then the reason for the not charging became quite obvious, the insulation of the stator wires had fallen apart with age, and was clearly short circuiting

I replaced the stator with a new one from Cycle Electric Inc, and put in a new rotor as well while I was at it.

The bike is ready to go again, I also treated it to a new Mullins Chaindrive kicker pedal, as the rubber on the old one was starting to come off. Next party will be Bildtnotbought in a few weeks, looking forward to that!
