Project started October 2023,

Next job, the transmission! After offsetting the whole transmission 8.5 mm to the left so the chain will not rub that fat tire, we will now replace the mainshaft of the transmission with a mainshaft as used from 1937 to 1964 which is 19 mm shorter. As a result the clutch and primary will be 10.5 mm closer to the centerline of the bike, which is exactly what we want!

We disassembled the transmission and inspected all the parts, which were in surprisingly good shape.
This is a fairly easy job, as long you work neatly and systematically. We put all the parts in compartments of a box in the order in which they came out, replaced the ball bearing behind the kicker cover and the retaining rings.

After cleaning the housing and parts we put all back together in the reverse order with the new shorter mainshaft (made by Andrews by the way) but left the kickstart cover off because we will be installing a Cannonball electric start which goes between the kicker cover and the transmission casing.

In the next episode we will install the Cannonball starter, which will be hidden under the swingarm.
