Project started October 2023,

Although the testpiece had looked very promising, we soon found out that the full wheelcover was not going to work this way; the machine itself was preventing us from doing a full circle as it interfered with the cover, as the total height of the wheelcover is too much to fit in the Pullmax.

Oh well, time for plan B! We are now going to try our hand at some metal spinning like in the Youtube movie above. We realise it won't be as easy as it looks but the only way to learn new things is to try them.

We will be using the big URSUS lathe, and make the tooling from scratch so here we go:

We started with a wheel from a skeeler, removed the inside plastic bit and made a new inner wheel from aluminium with a big roller bearing. The outside of the skeeler wheel is some kind of hard nylon which we hope will not damage the aluminum blank we will be using.

Most of the parts for "ARM-2" are ready to be welded together, next week we will make " ARM-1" and then machine from a giant lump of steel the "plug" that we will be pressing against; basically a solid steel disc with the inside shape of the wheelcover. If this does not work we will smoothly move to Plan C where we make another solid steel disc with the outside shape of the wheelcover and use a big hydraulic press.....
